Adding a Driver to Your Auto Insurance Policy

There are no limits for the number of people that can be added to an auto insurance policy. But, you should only list those who live with you or use your car. Remember, the driving history of the person you are adding may have an effect on your policy. So, choose wisely!

Who Can I Add To My Car Insurance Policy

Household members are generally the people you will be adding to your auto insurance policy. These are the people who may regularly drive your car and who should be protected by your insurance. Some examples of household members include:

  • Your spouse
  • Your children that live with you
  • Foster children
  • Other family members that live with you
  • Others licensed drivers that live with you
  • Roommates

Some carriers require that occasional drivers of your car be listed on your policy, even if they don’t live in your household. So, someone who uses your car, perhaps to provide you assistance, but parks your car at your home every night, should be listed as an occasional driver on your policy in order to protect you and them.

Specific carriers have specific variations on who can be listed on your auto insurance policy as a driver. But generally, the criteria are immediate and extended family members that live with you or non-related members of your household that may drive your vehicle on a regular basis.

Don’t Overlook Roommates

If you have a roommate, who occasionally borrows your car, it’s a good idea to add them to your policy. There are two reasons for this.

First, if a licensed driver from your household borrows your car and then has an accident the insurance company will likely deny your claim if they have not been listed on your policy.

Second, you may be able to save money with a multi-driver discount.

How Much Will it Cost to Add a Driver to My Policy?

  • How long the driver has had their license (such as a teen driver)
  • Their driving history
  • Their relationship to the policy holder
  • Their sex, age and marital status of the driver
